The use of renewable energy technologies and the thrust toward energy efficiency have been growing trends in the Caribbean region within recent years. In particular, Barbados has been a leader within the region in the use of solar energy through the production and use of solar water heaters.
Despite the challenges, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have rich ecological resources, marine and land biodiversity including beaches, coral reefs, rain-forests, rivers, and lakes. They enjoy tropical and sub-tropical climates, which in addition to their “islandness” are alluring to tourists. As such tourism is a major industry among these nations and territories. Regarding sustainability, Governments of SIDS must face these realities and develop sustainable national strategic plans.
Adequate housing is a global problem affecting many, especially the poor and vulnerable in every country, and engaging the attention of governments, policymakers and academics around the world.
